With the participation of aeronautical engineers, experts and electricians, who are investigating the case at the behest of victims’ families, a press conference was held at the ESIEA offices by relatives of victims and survivors of the tragedy.
If only the photo-signaling had worked, this would have been enough to avoid the accident, note, among others, the members of the investigative committee of independent experts (EDAPO) who participated.
As they said throughout the press conference, there were “heaps of human errors and omissions” while for all of this to happen there was “fertile ground in an environment of total disregard for regulations and procedures”.
“The gradual collapse of systems and procedures has not led to any measures being taken (reducing speeds, thinning routes, extra staff, extra controls). (…) The total lack of safety culture in the Railways does not allow even today”, one year after the tragic accident, “the substantial utilization of the conclusions about the specific accident in order to avoid the next one”, said the commission.
Victims’ relatives also took the floor, exposing the actions of those responsible so far. The brother of 34-year-old Vaios Vlachos, Vangelis Vlachos, said: “Some of the victims would have been saved, but they were burned alive. Some families would not be in this position. The official findings do not cover us(…) we have not managed to find the time to honor our people. We want to know what happened, why 57 people were murdered, and a year later there are still questions. The site was cordoned off, almost a week after the accident. There were still human remains, but evidence had already been destroyed. We will be the laughing stock of Europe for the way this accident was investigated.”
Also, speaking on behalf of the relatives, he referred to the attacks that were made towards the relatives saying that: “we were asked to be mute, both the ministers and people of the church. We will not be mute until we know the truth.”
The mother of 22-year-old Giorgos said characteristically: “After the cremation, the ashes of the dead are given to the families. The ashes of our dead have been thrown.”

Radiotelephony regulations are not observed
There has been no updating of the obsolete GKK and other operating regulations
There are no Minimum Operating Requirements with a clear escalation of additional measures
No measures are taken (e.g. auctions) in immediate reaction to a degradation of technical specifications due to a breakdown
There is no process of actual control of the implementation of the GKK and no evaluation of the performance of personnel in critical positions for safety
