A few days ago, the independent media of the Westrecognized by the Ministry of Culture (CPPAP number: 0326 W 95264) and founded five years ago, was abruptly silenced. This account, which brought together a community of 160,000 subscribers engaged, was deleted without explanation. This arbitrary decision by Meta is a direct attack on our freedom of expression.
We express our deep concern about the increasing censorship of right-wing media. Before this deletion, several of our publications were removed by Instagram. However, each time, our appeals were heard and we had won our case. Concerned about this recurring censorship, David Alaime, founder ofof the Westcontacted an Instagram advisor through an offer he had subscribed to, to find out if the account of the West was “in danger.” His response was reassuring: “No worries.” However, two weeks later, with no new posts in the meantime, the account was closed.
For years, of the West shared information that others would rather ignore. This account gave voice to those who were pushed aside by the mainstream media. Today, all of those efforts have been undone because they dared to challenge mainstream thinking.
David Alaime was 22 years old when he founded of the Westalongside his studies. He worked tirelessly to build this media. What is happening today is not just an attack on of the Westit is an attack on the freedom of expression of each and every one of us. Today, it is our voice that is muzzled. Tomorrow, it could be yours.
Pierre Gentillet, lawyer, gave his opinion on this censorship during his appearance on Ligne Droite on August 27, 2024: The European Commission ” wants to establish a legal framework for these new structures that are Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, etc. Because these tools have never been clearly defined by the legislator. The one who insists most on establishing a framework for them, which is a censorship framework, is the European legislator. The legal status of these platforms is not clear. The direction in which we are increasingly moving, and this is what Thierry Breton (European Commissioner for the Internal Market) wanted, is to ensure that these platforms are not considered as forums or media, but assimilated to content publishers. And consequently, as content publishers, if they become responsible for everything that is said there, it is no longer possible. »
Let’s not stay silent. We need you to continue to fight, to rebuild, to inform. Together, let’s say no to Instagram’s political censorship, which of the West was a victim, as well as the account of Alice Cordier, president of the Collectif Némésis, who was in contact with many victims of sexual assault and rape, denouncing the insecurity in which women live in France in 2024. We can also mention the account Une Bonne Droite, which relays the news. In the previous days, the Instagram account of Frontières was banned four times in less than a week, as were those of Écolucide, La Cocarde Étudiante, the journalist Jordan Florentin, and many other accounts of influencers or right-wing media whose only common point is their political line.
We would like to thank those who have already taken a stand, such as Julie Rechagneux, Pierre-Romain Thionnet, Sarah Knafo, Eric Zemmour, Marion Maréchal, Julie Lechanteux, Laure Lavalette, Julien Odoul, Nicolas Meizonnet, Julie Rechagneux, Julien Limongi, Antoine Villedieu, Philippe Ballard, Tiffany Joncour, Michèle Martinez, Matthias Renault, Charles Alloncle, Mathilde Androuët, Nicolas Dupont-Aignan, Philippe Vardon, Damien Rieu, Matthieu Bock-Côté, Pierre Gentillet, Gilbert Collard, Catherine Griset, Marguerite Stern, and others.
