Headache is one of the most common pain among people, which is a pain in one of the different areas of the head. The headache may affect the area behind the eye, causing a feeling of pain and pressure directly behind the eye. We review the causes and symptoms of headache behind the eye.
Causes of eye headache
There are different reasons for feeling a headache in the eye (or pain in the area behind the eye), and these are the main ones:
1- Tension headache
Tension headache is one of the most common types of headache, and anyone may be susceptible to it, although it is actually more common among women in particular.
The headache in the eye usually occurs periodically, only to return to the sufferer 1-2 times during one month. But in some cases, this type of headache may become chronic, and the sufferer needs 15 days during one month, and it is possible for this type of headache to afflict a person with pain and pressure in the eye (eye headache), and its other symptoms include:
- A feeling of softness in the scalp.
- Pain in the forehead and in the neck.
2- Cluster headache
A cluster headache is a series of very painful, short-lived headaches. This type of headache is not common.
A cluster headache can last between 15 – 60 minutes, and cause a tingling or piercing pain in the area behind the eye in particular.
Other cluster headache symptoms include:
- Red eyes.
- Puffy and swollen eyes.
- Excessive tears.
3- Migraine
It is pressure or pain that a person feels in the area behind the eye. It is considered one of the worst types of headache at all, because it causes pain that may last with the sufferer for hours on end or for days without stopping.
The pain experienced by a migraine patient can have huge negative impacts on a patient’s life.
Other symptoms include:
- Sensitivity to light.
- Pain in the eyes.
- Dizziness and lightheadedness.
- nausea.
- General physical weakness.
- vomiting.
- Difficulty seeing.
- Mood swings.
4- Eye strain
Sometimes the cause of eye headaches may be problems with vision or eyes and eye strain as a result of them. As these problems may stimulate the brain to make a greater effort in order to see, which appears in the form of headache or pain in the eyes.
Among the eye problems that may cause eye pain and headache:
- Scleritis.
- Optic neuritis.
- Graves’ disease.
- The blue water.
5- Sinusitis
A sinus infection may cause headache-like pain due to nasal congestion, and congestion is usually accompanied by a feeling of pressure in the forehead, cheeks, and the back of the eye.
These are some of the possible symptoms associated with sinusitis:
- Stuffy nose.
- Pain in the upper teeth.
- Fatigue and exhaustion.
- Pain that gets worse when lying down.
