The Ministry of Economy (Mineco) authorized the import of 15 thousand metric tons of this product with zero tariff. This is because it is expected that black bean production in the country will not be sufficient to guarantee demand in the country.

This provision of Mineco is included in Ministerial Agreement Number 285-2024, which was published last Thursday in the Diario de Centro América.

In accordance with the ministerial provision, importation may be carried out from May 1 to December 31 of this year.

Likewise, the agreement indicates that all people who are interested in importing the grain without tariffs must comply with the provisions of Ministerial Agreement No. 155-2023, of Mineco, Regulations for the Activation and Administration of the Black Bean Tariff Quota. Shortage or any other cause that threatens the food security of Guatemala.

In addition, the publication indicates that the agreement will come into force on May 1.

INSUFFICIENCY OF BASIC GRAIN

Mineco issued this measure after the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food (MAGA) reported that national bean production will be insufficient to satisfy demand during the current year.

Due to this, it is necessary to take the pertinent measures to guarantee that the population has sufficient supply to satisfy the demand for grain.

Recently, Mineco also authorized the import of 55 thousand metric tons of white corn with zero tariffs, with the aim of guaranteeing sufficient supply of this grain and satisfying the demand of the population, they say.
