no surprises after first wave of results, Trump and Biden prevail in their strongholds

While America has its eyes riveted on the results of a handful of key states, the early results of this US presidential election have been in line with expectations in strongholds of both parties. At 12:30 a.m., Tuesday, November 3 (5:30 a.m. Wednesday, French time), Donald Trump had won 22 states and Joe Biden 18, according to the Associated Press agency, without any state changing color compared to 2016.

Joe Biden notably won 55 voters by winning in California, but Donald Trump had no chance in this democratic state. More broadly, the former vice-president of Barack Obama retains his party’s strongholds on the west coast and the east coast, while the outgoing president wins in the south and the Midwest, traditionally more conservative.

The first results in “swing states” were not announced by the Associated Press until Wednesday, after midnight, with Donald Trump’s victories in Florida, Iowa and Ohio, states he had won in 2016.

In detail, Joe Biden came out on top in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, the State of New York, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia and Washington State, as well as in the District of Columbia, where the capital Washington is located.

For his part, Donald Trump won Alabama, Arkansas, South Carolina, North Dakota, South Dakota, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Utah, West Virginia and Wyoming, as well as Nebraska, some of whose electors are, however, attributed to the level local constituencies whose results have not yet been announced.
