The UDF had supported the LDF to prevent the BJP, the largest single party, from gaining power in Thrissur Avinisseri and Alappuzha Thiruvananthapuram. However, the LDF presidents resigned after saying they did not want to come to power with the support of the Congress.

The panchayat presidents of Kotangal and Pangode panchayats, which came to power with the support of the SDPI, also resigned.
