FC Emmen coach Fred Grim has been fired with immediate effect. That decision was taken after an internal evaluation of the club’s performance in recent weeks, which clouded the prospect of promotion to the Premier League.
Emmen was relegated from the Premier League last season and wanted to be promoted again as quickly as possible with Grim as Dick Lukkien’s successor. However, Emmen is now in a disappointing twelfth place in the first division.
The Drenthe team still has a chance to reach the play-offs for promotion. The club still has five rounds in the fourth period to achieve this.

General manager Rinse Bleeker explained the decision to dismiss Grim and his assistant Erwin van Breugel on the club website. “There was insufficient support and confidence within the club to achieve the objective, namely qualification for the play-offs. The coming matches are extremely important to achieve that objective and we want to achieve that with this intervention.”
Emmen is still considering the composition of the technical staff for the rest of this season.
Career Grim
Former goalkeeper Grim was also technical director of FC Emmen. That position will be taken over by Nico Haak, head of the club’s youth training, from May 1.
Before that he trained Willem II and RKC, among others. In 2017, Grim was in charge of the Dutch national team as interim national coach for three international matches.
