There will be no skating marathon on natural ice this weekend. The ice rink in Winterswijk was the only viable option, but the organization has announced that it is no longer feasible to organize the first marathon this weekend.
“They stopped spraying last night,” says ice master Auke Spijkstra. “This morning I saw that the car windows weren’t even frozen and there was almost no ice left. It’s very sad.”
Spijkstra enjoyed the enthusiasm with which people from the area helped. “Almost 25 people helped to get the track and boarding ready. Everyone was curious whether it would go ahead, that enthusiasm was wonderful.”
Spray again anyway
According to Spijkstra, it will freeze again this afternoon. “We will spray again today to open the track for members, but we will no longer achieve the required three centimeters for a marathon.”
Every year when it starts to freeze, different ice rinks compete to see who can organize the first marathon on natural ice. Last year the honor went to Burgum in Friesland for the first time.
In the years before that, Haaksbergen and Noordlaren alternated.
