No shooting in New York for first time since 1993 – World

For the first time in 25 years, there was no shooting and no murders over a weekend in New York City – the city is rejoicing.

In Vienna, a murder is a big thing, fortunately it is rare, as is a shooting. Not so in the US, where they are commonplace in big cities. That’s why the New York police were really happy on Monday: No shooting, no murder from Friday to Sunday. That was last in 1993.

Street Police Chief Chief Rodney Harrison called it a “milestone.” He thanked his employees and the citizens for this.

Mayor Bill de Blasio called it “extraordinary” that “in a city of 8.6 million people there hasn’t been a single shooting for three days.”

Up to the previous weekend, there had been 600 shootings in the city this year, two percent fewer than in the same period last year. 2017 also saw 292 murders, the lowest number since the 1950s. This year there were 147 murders up to October, so you could beat last year’s level.
