“No Sexist Songs, Including ‘Layla’, Allowed at Future Festivals”

Around nine months after the nationwide excitement about the sexist party hit “Layla”, the city of Würzburg is sticking with it: Even at the upcoming spring folk festival, which starts this Saturday, the song should not be heard in the marquee. The marquee operator was asked not to play “Layla” and other racist or sexist songs, even if the audience asked for it, a city spokesman said on Tuesday. The “Main-Post” had previously reported.

Würzburg had decided in 2021 to no longer allow racist and sexist songs at city festivals. This also applies to the controversial “Donaulied”, the text of which revolves around a rape.

Würzburg hit the headlines nationwide last summer because it banned the summer hit “Layla” by DJ Robin & Schürze from the “Kiliani” folk festival. At that time, too, the marquee operator was asked not to play the song anymore. Weeks of discussions ensued across the country. At the Oktoberfest, the controversial party song was voted Oktoberfest hit 2022.
