Diana Spencer would have turned 60 on July 1 had it not been for that fateful day on August 31, 1997 in Paris. The famous princess was given a statue on Thursday that was unveiled by her sons Harry and William. Relations between the brothers had been tense in recent months, but the folds between the two smiling princes appeared to have smoothed out when they appeared together at Kensington Palace on Thursday. The ceremony itself ended with an anticlimax: without much ceremony or speeches, the curtain was pulled back to reveal the beautiful statue.

The statue stands in the newly created Sunken Garden, in the grounds of Kensington Palace, one of the princess’ favorite places. Diana would have turned 60 on Thursday. She died in a tragic traffic accident in 1997, chased by paparazzi in Paris.
“Every day we wish she was still with us and we hope that this statue will forever symbolize her life and memory,” Harry and William said in a joint statement. Princess Diana is remembered for her love, strength and character. “Qualities she used as a force for good in the world.” Her two sons commissioned the sculpture themselves in 2017, which was designed by sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley.
The relationship between William (39) and Harry (36) is tense. The reason is the serious accusations of racism in the royal family that Harry made. Harry and his wife Meghan relinquished their royal duties a year ago and moved to the US. The unveiling of the statue marks the brothers’ second joint appearance since Harry’s farewell. In April, he attended Prince Philip’s funeral.
