No Prosecution for Highland Games Participant in Fatal Incident

The Public Prosecution Service (OM) will not prosecute a participant of an event in Geldrop for the incident in which a 65-year-old man died on August 7, 2022. According to the Public Prosecution Service, it appears “out of nothing” that the thrower of the metal ball that killed the man can be blamed.

That day the so-called Highland Games took place at the Landgoed Kasteel Geldrop. One of the elements of the traditional Scottish games was the hammer throw. That was fatal for the 65-year-old passerby. The ball flew over a hedge during the hammer throw and hit him. He died on the spot.

According to the Public Prosecution Service, that hedge was not part of the event site. They did investigate whether the thrower of the ball is to blame. But that turns out not to be the case, and so the case against him is dropped.

The Public Prosecution Service says it is conducting further investigation into the organization of the event. It turned out that he had not applied for a permit.
