The restart of the Belgian football competition will not be postponed. That was decided on Monday at the General Meeting of the Pro League. A majority was needed to postpone matchday 22, but it was not found. So there will be football next weekend.

The Belgian professional clubs have been ravaged by the corona virus since last week. In one week, at least 60 players tested positive and staff members were not spared either. For many clubs, the infections messed up the entire preparation. An extra setback in a period in which many clubs miss players due to the Africa Cup and have to play their matches in empty stadiums.

Last Friday, AA Gent and Zulte Waregem, among others, suggested postponing the restart of the competition after the winter break – normally scheduled for January 14 – by a week. Eddy Cordier, CEO of Zulte Waregem and member of the Board of Directors of the Pro League, claimed that most professional clubs would agree. On Monday, those clubs were given the opportunity to vote on the issue at the General Assembly of the Pro League. A simple majority was enough to postpone the restart of the competition, but it was not achieved. In total there were 49 votes (five clubs have three votes, thirteen clubs have two votes and eight clubs have one vote).
