No PiP for iOS YouTube app users yet

Until the end of last week, Premium users of the YouTube app with an iOS device could still use a so-called picture-in-picture function. This was a test in the run-up to the final rollout of the PiP function for iOS. However, as it turns out after the end of the test period, that rollout will have to wait a while.

No PiP for iOS app

The test is over and there is no news yet about when the feature will be available for iOS users on the YouTube app. For now, PiP in the YouTube app is only reserved for Premium Android users.

Please note, this concerns the use of the PiP function in the YouTube app and not the streaming service of the video platform, YouTube TV. PiP is currently being rolled out for YouTube’s streaming service. This applies to both Android and iOS users. For now, however, only Android users can use this feature in combination with the YouTube app. Provided they have a Premium subscription.

Confusion about rollout

After the testing phase for the PiP function ended, April 8, some things arose here and there confusion among iOS users about the availability of the feature. YouTube tweeted that PiP was going to be rolled out for all iOS devices that have at least iOS 15, but corrected that a day later with the addition that this only applies to YouTube TV and not to the YouTube app for iOS (see tweet above) .

Whether, and if so when, the PiP function for the iOS version of the YouTube app will be rolled out is unknown. No (definitive) statements have yet been made about this. The last official ‘news’ in this regard dates from more than a month ago. Then the story was that the platform hoped to be able to roll out PiP within a few months to all iOS users, including those without a Premium subscription.
