The city council has decided to calm traffic on the popular square. There should soon be retractable bollards.

The western and eastern side streets between Bleichstrasse and Bieberer Strasse will be closed to traffic on Wilhelmsplatz. The Offenbach city council decided on Thursday. Prior to a permanent structural solution using retractable bollards, information boards should first be put up and controls carried out.

“The pandemic helped make our dream come true,” said the leader of the Greens parliamentary group, Sybille Schumann. On the one hand, the catering industry would have to expand its outdoor areas in order to comply with hygiene regulations and would therefore need more space. On the other hand, more and more people came to Wilhelmsplatz on foot or by bike. According to Schumann, the study by the institute “LQM Marktforschung” from Mainz has shown “impressively” that there is a great deal of approval from market users, residents and the Offenbach population for the liberation of the side streets from car traffic and the provision of additional parking spaces for bicycles .

After an amendment by the Free Voters, the following points were included in the coalition’s motion: All road users are exempt from the blockage: inside with a justified request, such as market feeders: inside for setting up and dismantling on the three weekly market days during market times, Care services, residents: inside and delivery traffic. Until a loading zone concept has been drawn up, there should be an “early shopping” time window for customers of the store, which will allow them to drive down the side streets for larger purchases until 11 a.m.

The parking spaces in front of the restaurants on the east and west side streets of Wilhelmsplatz are no longer available as part of the traffic calming. This does not affect the number of disabled parking spaces for which the city council is commissioned to find a suitable space.
