“(The Chinese people) have always pursued an independent foreign peace policy, upholding justice and resolutely opposes hegemonism and power politics,” Xi said, as quoted by the Straits Times, Monday (25/10/2021).

Although he did not explicitly mention the United States, Xi said international rules cannot be dictated by any single country or bloc.
“International rules can only be jointly set by the 193 UN members. This cannot be left to the decisions of any one country or bloc. International rules must be jointly obeyed by all 193 UN members, and there should be no exceptions,” Xi explained.
Xi was speaking at a conference in Beijing to mark five decades since “the restoration of the People’s Republic of China’s legitimate seat at the United Nations”. Beijing took the UN seat in 1971, replacing the Republic of China, the official name for Taiwan, after Washington shifted diplomatic recognition from Taipei to Beijing.

The conference was attended by diplomats and representatives of international organizations in China, and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who addressed the conference virtually.
In his speech, Xi pointed to China’s international contribution to vaccines and assistance related to the Corona pandemic. He praised his government’s achievements in eliminating absolute poverty.
