Turkey has banned entry from nine countries, including Austria. This affects not only Austrians, but also Turkish citizens.
Already on Thursday, Turkey discontinued flights to China, Italy, South Korea, Iran and Iraq. The Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has had other measures decided on because of the corona virus: from Monday on, schools across the country will be closed for at least a week, and those affected should be educated via distance learning.
“High security risk”
“All countries worldwide are set to ‘high security risk’ (security level 4 of 6). This is an extraordinary but necessary step that we have taken tonight,” said Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg on Thursday. The unpredictability of the spread of the virus requires special vigilance on the part of the Austrians. “We therefore strongly advise against all trips that are not absolutely necessary and call for a return to Austria while there are still options for return trips.”
As of Monday, March 16, 2020 at midnight, air traffic from France, Switzerland and Spain to Austria will cease. Those affected can obtain information on the general legal basis for travel bookings and cancellations from the Association for Consumer Information (Tel. 0800 201 211).
