The symbol M+S is nothing else than mud+snow (mud+snow). In the past, this was the marking of tires designed for driving in difficult conditions. The M+S sign appeared on the so-called universal, but also winter tires. What’s more, some summer tires also have M+S. In practice, M+S means universal tires.
The problem is that this symbol has never meant anything more than the manufacturer’s declaration that these tires can handle (somehow) snow and mud. In practice, we can say that M+S means nothing. However, several countries in Europe that require the use of winter tires (depending on the conditions, in a given period or on marked roads) allow M+S tires, putting them on an equal footing with all-season tires. One of such countries is Germany.
From October 2024, only winter and all-season tires with the “Alpine symbol” (snowflake and mountain) will be allowed to be used in winter conditions in Germany. So from there it will no longer be possible to use tires with the “M+S” marking as winter tires. Of course, there is no ban on using such tires at all, because the M+S symbol still appears on classic winter tires.
