The Austrian village of Fucking has changed its name. Because the name is a common swear word in English, the place name sign was stolen with some regularity. Many people – naked or otherwise – also posed for photos near the board.
That is why Fucking now uses the ultimate contraceptive method to prevent that in the future: the village is renamed Fugging.
The new name will apply from 1 January. About 100 people live in the village, which is located near Salzburg. The name dates back to at least the year 1070. It is said to have been named after a nobleman called Focko.
The Grand Tour
Many international media have paid attention to the village over the years. A German brewer also named a beer after the town: Fucking Hell.
In an episode of car program The Grand Tour Presenter Jeremy Clarkson visited the village. That visit was part of a German-Austrian tour that started in Wank. From there it went to Kissing, on to Petting, Clarkson pushed on to Fucking and ended up in Wedding.
In recent years, residents have made several efforts to change the name of the village. The municipality thought it could cope with the theft of the signs by screwing the posts into concrete, but that turned out to be in vain.
