Cases of COVID-19 have again seen an increase in a number of countries around the world, including the UK. This once again forces people to be vigilant against various COVID-19 symptoms that may appear.
Common COVID-19 symptoms that he still frequently complains about include sore throat, runny nose, and headache. However, a recent report from The Zoe Covid Study App tracked the predominant new symptom of COVID-19 among patients, namely hyposmia.
“Hyposmia, or impaired ability to smell, is one of the symptoms you can experience,” the report said. Express UKTuesday (20/12/2022).
This hyposmia adds to the list of respiratory symptoms experienced by COVID-19 patients. According to research published in the journal HNO, this hyposmia was the main or only symptom felt in the two study subjects.
In the same study, approximately 31% of patients had olfactory disturbances and rhinitis. This condition is described as chronic sneezing or nasal congestion.
In addition to a reduced ability to smell, patients with COVID-19 also often report parosmia. This is a condition where the smell of familiar objects changes and becomes an unpleasant smell.
There are also those who report symptoms of phantosmia, i.e. someone who suddenly smells something that doesn’t exist.
“Although COVID still triggers symptoms that occur in the nose, total loss of smell (anosmia) is still a less common symptom,” Zoe explained.
Previously, anosmia was the leading symptom of COVID-19. However, it currently ranks 14th on the list of common symptoms. Current COVID-19 patients are more likely to report a change in smell than a complete loss of smell.
