No more account sharing: Lawyer explains how Netflix could enforce this

Many users wonder if they will be allowed to share passwords with close friends or family in the future. CHIP asked Christian Solmecke when account sharing actually begins.

“A Netflix account is for household sharing, that is, everyone living with the account owner. People not in your household must sign up for their own account to watch Netflix,” says he.

Friends, acquaintances and family members who do not live in the same house or apartment may not use the Netflix account in the future. What could happen if I keep giving my Netflix password to other people?

Solmecke explains what penalties customers have to reckon with when sharing an account: “A violation of the applicable terms and conditions to which customers agreed when concluding the contract is a breach of contract. This can lead to the account being blocked, immediate termination and/or even a claim for damages. The damage would then be the saved fees.” This could affect both the account holder and the co-user.
