No Money, No Festival: Youth Festival in Salzburg Postponed and Program Shortened Due to Budget Cuts

The youth festival “5020” should have started in the city of Salzburg on Thursday evening. But the start has now had to be postponed and the program shortened because there is no money.

After the decision by the ÖVP and FPÖ with the second vote of Mayor Harald Preuner (ÖVP), the festival budget was cut by almost half, as reported. The organizer of the “5020” festival Markus Rauchmann says that the planned free events in particular can therefore no longer take place.

40,000 euros less budget

“Actually, it should have started now with the first vernissage in the Baroque Museum. But due to the budget cut, we had to downsize the program. Unfortunately, the city of Salzburg has decided to cut the original budget of 100,000 euros by 40,000 euros, and that puts us in the unfortunate position of making savings exactly where it hurts young people in particular. We have to cancel all low-threshold offers – such as performances, exhibitions, concerts in the park.”

The youth festival therefore only lasts two weeks and begins on June 30th in Mirabell Palace. More on that shortly for the 5020 youth festival (salzburg.ORF.at).
