No money for unvaccinated people – Germany

Compensation for loss of earnings in the event of quarantine not applicable / contact restrictions expected.

(dpa / AFP). Unvaccinated people in Baden-Württemberg will no longer be compensated for loss of earnings due to a corona quarantine from mid-September. The State Health Office announced on Thursday. The state is thus implementing a provision of the Infection Protection Act. Meanwhile, the fourth wave of pandemics is picking up speed.

According to the State Ministry of Health, the Infection Protection Act provides for a claim for compensation if quarantine or a ban on work is imposed on employees or self-employed. Such a claim is ruled out if the secretion could have been avoided by vaccination. “This also applies to non-vaccinated contacts who have to be quarantined,” said the ministry.

“We assume that everyone in Baden-Württemberg had the opportunity to have a vaccination by September 15,” said the head of the Ministry of Health, Uwe Lahl. Until then, every adult who has not yet been vaccinated can receive complete vaccination protection. The new rule does not apply to people who cannot take advantage of a vaccination, for example for medical reasons.

According to the Ministry of Health, the country is already in the fourth wave: According to this, 537 corona patients are currently being treated in the hospitals, compared with 321 last week. Of the 116 people who are now in intensive care units (95 last week), 95 percent are not vaccinated.

The chief virologist at the Berlin Charité, Christian Drosten, expects anti-corona restrictions to be tightened again in autumn due to the increasing number of cases. He said that to Deutschlandfunk. A paper by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), which recommends a 10 percent contact reduction for the beginning of October and a further 30 percent reduction for November, is already out of date at several points. The transmission rate of the delta variant is higher than assumed, the RKI had calculated vaccination rates that were too optimistic. Drosten said that if the measures were to be tightened, contacts would have to be restricted “for society as a whole,” including those who had already been vaccinated.

In view of a share of the population of just over 60 percent who are fully vaccinated, Drosten said: “We cannot go into autumn with this vaccination quota. That is absolutely not enough.” A vaccination rate of 90 percent and more is desirable for society as a whole.
