‘No Man Left Behind’ Became the Search Motto of KRI Nanggala

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

The slogan ‘No Man Left Behind’ or ‘don’t leave anyone’ remains burning in the hearts of the Submarine search and rescue team KRI Nanggala 402 who lost contact in Bali waters since Wednesday (21/4).

Currently, the search continues to be carried out by the TNI, assisted by a number of parties such as the National Police, Basarnas, and several troops from other countries.

In the press conference, the TNI stated that it had upgraded the search status for KRI Nanggala 402 from submiss to the subsunk phase (submarine sunk).

With this increase in status, the TNI will prepare medical evacuations, so that they can immediately evacuate any ship crew that is found.

The status upgrade to subsunk was taken after they found some authentic evidence of fragments of KRI Nanggala goods, one of which was in the form of torpedo tubes, drinking water tubes, and prayer tools.

Items were found within a 10 kilometer radius of the search point, while no other ships had passed in the area. The discovery of some of these items, according to Yudo, also indicates that the ship had cracks.

However, the TNI stated that it would not make any guesses about the condition of the KRI Nanggala submarine crew because there was no evidence of any of them.

“We are not sure how they are, because we have not found them. So we cannot predict what their condition will be,” said Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Navy (KSAL) Admiral TNI Yudo Margono, in a press conference on Saturday (24/4).

Commander of an accomplished ship

The German-made ship, which has been officially used by the Indonesian Navy since 1981, carries 53 personnel consisting of TNI soldiers.

Of the 53 people, 49 of them were crew members (ABK), one was the commander of the ship and three others served as arsenal or artillery weapons for the navy.

CNNIndonesia.com obtained a copy of the manifest KRI Nanggala 402. In the letter numbered Order Number Sprin / 150 / IV / 2021 ordered Marine Lieutenant Colonel (P) Heri Oktavian who was the Commander of KRI Nanggala 402 along with a number of other names listed in the attachment to carry out tasks in training frame for SUT torpedo shooters.

One of the CNN Indonesia TV crew, Iwan Hermawan, in a news broadcast on Saturday night said that he was close to the captain of the submarine, Marine Lt. Col. (P) Heri Oktavian.

Iwan said that Heri is an accomplished and friendly figure, both of them were seen when Iwan regularly communicated with Heri via cyberspace until he met at the Surabaya Navy headquarters several years ago, one of which was to look at the submarine.

“He is a figure who is very passionate about his career but remains humble, even when talking to me, who is a civilian outside the military. I know he is happy with his career, even until now he is the head of a diving school,” said Iwan during an interview.

“At the moment I hope and fantasize that the condition of him and the entire KRI submarine crew will be fine. Even if he died, he died while doing something he loved so much,” he continued.
