Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
Diabetes referred to as a comorbid for Covid-19. However, some Covid-19 survivors said their blood sugar increased rapidly after being infected and was at risk of diabetes.
Diabetes can also attack someone after being declared cured of Covid-19. In other words, Covid-19 infection can cause diabetes in some people.
Martha Rosana, staff of the endocrine, metabolic and diabetes division, Department of Internal Medicine RSCM-FKUI, said this could happen. There are several possible reasons this could happen.
One of the reasons is that Covid-19 survivors have indeed become carriers or have previously had diabetes but it has not been severe and has not been detected.
In addition, the possibility of Covid-19 also causing diabetes to occur due to the corona virus attack on several cells and organs in the body, one of which is the pancreas which is in charge of producing insulin. Therefore, blood sugar becomes high, especially after recovering from Covid-19.
“Covid-19 can worsen blood sugar, because this virus is very unique and can attack cells in the body, including insulin cells in the pancreas,” Martha said in a media briefing held by Tropicana Slim virtually, Friday (12/11).
Therefore, detecting the possibility of a potential candidate for diabetes in the body is very important, especially for those who have a high risk. For example, parents have a history of diabetes, have not ideal body weight or obesity to an unbalanced lifestyle.
“Because you can be exposed to Covid-19 without knowing you have diabetes and it only increases after you become a survivor,” he said.
Quoted from the official Instagram account for pandemictalks, several studies have also shown that the Covid-19 virus can infect fat cells in body tissues. This can cause adiponectin production to decrease which makes the body’s cells become resistant to insulin.
This results in high blood sugar, thus potentially causing diabetes. Covid-19 is indeed a very complex disease, the effect is not only causing diabetes but several other diseases which later became known as long covid-19.
Meanwhile, Martha said that it is important to maintain personal health so as not to be exposed to Covid-19 and at the same time to get diabetes. For example, by starting to live a healthy life and avoid excessive sugar consumption.
“Starting from now, because it’s never too late,” he said.
