No Larifari – Berlin, a completely firecrackers-free zone on New Year’s Eve – BZ Berlin

Once a week, BZ editor Larissa Hoppe writes at this point about everyday topics that concern her. Today it’s about fireworks at the turn of the year.

New Year’s Eve is just a horror. There is a bang and rattle everywhere. It could be different. Corona has shown that what I would never have thought possible until then is feasible: You can welcome the New Year without a pile of rubbish, air pollution and annoying noise.

Both last year and this year, the sale of pyrotechnics has been banned, and there are 57 streets and squares where people are not allowed to bang. Excellent!

But that’s not enough. The exception should become the rule and the whole of Berlin should become a largely firefighter-free zone. Forever!

Because what used to be fun is now pretty dangerous. Instead of celebrating together, there is inconsiderate shooting and injuries, animals crouch in fear behind sofas and as a passer-by you walk through the streets from 6 p.m. in a permanent position of attention. Doesn’t have to be everything. Therefore two ideas.

Version 1: Berlin finds zones in which firecrackers and rockets can be detonated. Outside of these zones, i.e. mostly, there is a ban on igniting pyrotechnics. Exception: your own property.

Variant 2: The city, districts and districts host fireworks. Take the Easter bonfire, not everyone organizes that for himself on the green strip in front of his block. So the New Year’s Eve fireworks can also be professionally organized and held. Advantage: everything is more controlled and therefore safer. Maybe then something like an event feeling would arise. Also works at Myfest or the Carnival of Cultures. And how nice would it be if there were concentrated light spectacles at Oberbaumbrücke, Tempelhofer Feld, Tegel Airport, Potsdamer Platz and Co. ?!

Everything new means rethinking and a lot of effort. But now that many have agreed that we no longer need the time change, we could also break new ground with pyrotechnics.

How could that be hit? With a feasibility study and a survey. Ideally as early as next year.
