No ketamine in Thai ‘billion dollar drug trapping’, but harmless substance | NOW

Thai authorities say on Thursday that not 11.5 tons of ketamine was intercepted, as announced earlier this month, but that a harmless, legal chemical was found. This has The Guardian reported on Thursday.

The authorities declared on November 12 in a department store near the capital Bangkok to have found almost 1 billion US dollars (840 million euros) worth of ketamine. The largest announcement said this was “just the beginning” and that more investigations into drug trafficking would follow.

66 of the 450 bags of powder have now been examined. This shows that the white powder is not ketamine, but sodium phosphate. Whether the other bags contain drugs is still being investigated. The investigation has not yet been completed.

Thai justice minister Somsak Thepsuthin reported Thursday that a test for ketamine can get a positive test result if it is performed on sodium phosphate, a chemical used for food and cleaning products.
