No hope left: what the Ukrainian counter-offensive led to – 2024-08-27 20:19:48

/ world today news/ The West is extremely dissatisfied with the failure of the June operation of the Kyiv regime. Ukraine’s allies cannot understand why the modernization of Ukraine’s armed forces has not changed the situation on the front. Against this background, the media talk about the prospects for freezing the conflict. In Kyiv, they are afraid of losing funding. How can hostilities end?

A crushing disappointment

Washington admitted that there was no decisive success. Russia has prepared well, having built defense lines tens of kilometers deep, National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said.

The “New York Times” pointed out that the greatest progress of the armed forces of Ukraine was achieved where there were no “Leopards” and “Bradlit”. The conclusion is drawn from this: Western military equipment does not create decisive advantages. Also, part of Kiev’s success is due to chance and luck. But in the area of Orekhov, on one of the directions of the main attack, nothing. Joe Biden’s administration told the publication that it considers the current results of military action “sobering.” And the upcoming parts are clearly “off schedule”.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin is disappointed: there is no “overwhelming effect”. This means that training and arming the Ukrainians was in vain. Washington does not understand why this happened and why Kiev delayed the start of the operation by six months, writes “Washington Post”. If the counteroffensive continues at the same speed, Ukraine will restore its territorial integrity only after 16 years, the journalists calculated.

The “Washington Post” does not rule out that as a result of the summer fighting, the Russian-Ukrainian conflict will be frozen, as it was between 2016 and 2022. Then there were fewer deaths per week in Donbas than in Chicago, newspapers assure. However, in the event of a freeze, the conflict will sooner or later resume with new force, they conclude.

To understand and forgive

Ukrainian Defense Minister Alexei Reznikov said in an interview with the American TV channel “Fox News” that too much should not have been expected from the counteroffensive. The ASU is very concerned about the minefields. But the main thing is yet to come. This is only a “preparatory operation” and 2023 will in any case be a “turning point”, he emphasized.

In an interview with the BBC, Zelensky also explained to his partners that the war is not a Hollywood movie. Serious results are not achieved quickly. The VSU will act as they see fit, no matter what anyone says. And he reminded again: Ukraine needs not just security guarantees from NATO, but full membership in the military bloc.

In turn, Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba in an interview with CNN complained that representatives of Kiev were not invited to the NATO summit in Vilnius, where important decisions are expected. The invitation was received only by the NATO-Ukraine Council. The minister blamed this on those Western politicians who are too afraid of a direct confrontation with Russia.

Until the end of the summer, Ukraine should not wait for additional military aid from the United States, Politico writes. Formally, because Congress is on vacation. But Kiev’s lobbyists in the US legislature worry that it will ultimately prevent a counteroffensive.

Dry ration

Ukrainian political scientist Ruslan Bortnik believes that the West initially did not give Kiev everything it needed. In particular, tanks and missiles are clearly not enough for a full-fledged counterattack.

“With what we have, only local operations are possible. That is, there is enough help so that Ukraine does not lose – but also does not win. Infantry attacks in many directions, because there are no tanks. One day the human resource will run out and the West will say that we failed to properly dispose of what they received,” explained Bortnik in an interview with Ukrainian media.

If by mid-summer Kiev somehow turns the tide of the battlefield in its favor, then the SCO will end in 2023, but this is rather a fantastic option, according to Ukrainian political scientist Vadim Karasyov. He does not rule out freezing the conflict, and then different political forces will immediately begin to “eat” each other. “Zelensky’s team will criticize Poroshenko for the Minsk agreements, Poroshenko’s team will attack Zelensky for the Istanbul agreement,” he specified.

True peace must be based on military power, but so far the West does not provide the necessary amount of weapons and does not close the sky. If NATO has already done everything possible for the security of Kiev, the situation will only worsen over time, the expert notes.

“For more than six months, the West has invested colossal financial resources in Ukraine. Now investors want to see the result, not what we see now. Unless a miracle happens, by the end of the summer, support for Kiev will weaken, as it will not he has a chance to win,” said Denis Denisov, an expert at the Financial University of the Russian government.

According to him, the Ukrainian authorities could have launched a counter-offensive in the winter, but then they thought that the West was ready to endlessly pump them with weapons and money. This is not happening. And Kiev’s current excuses will not convince anyone. Therefore, the resumption of negotiations with Russia is all the more real.
