Belgian Ghys beats Evenepoel in the first stage of the Tour of Belgium

sport">Robbe Ghys has won the first stage in the Tour of Belgium. The Belgian from Sport Vlaanderen – Baloise won the stage from Beveren to Maarkedal after 175 kilometers ahead of his compatriots Remco Evenepoel and Gianni Marchand.

sport">Evenepoel takes the first leader’s jersey by bonus seconds. The cyclist from Deceuninck – Quick-Step is 5 seconds ahead of Ghys.

sport">Jan-Willen van Schip and Ghys were left out of a leading group, which initially also included Yoeri Havik. They were overtaken by the Belgians Remco Evenepoel and Victor Campenaerts with two relapsed leaders. At the front they were again with six, but after Van Schip and another early breakaway had fallen back, there were still four leaders.

sport">The last 18 kilometers it was mainly Evenepoel who set the pace with his compatriots Campenaerts, Ghys and Gianni Marchand in his wheel. Campenaerts had to let the front runners go and in the sprint Ghys was too fast for his fellow refugees.

sport">“The plan was to participate in the flight and the race came by my own door, so I really had motivation to show myself,” said Ghys, who goes to the Games on behalf of Belgium as a track cyclist. “We had a good relationship in the leading group and I was able to save myself a bit. Suddenly I saw Remco coming and I was told to keep his wheel. I almost had cramps, but knew that if I survived the cobblestone stretch, I would have a chance. Luckily he didn’t pull through.”

sport">The Tour of Belgium lasts until Sunday. A time trial over 11.2 kilometers will follow on Thursday.
