A nutritionist from the University of South Australia explained that a certain vitamin is “very difficult to get from the diet alone”, so it needs to be taken from supplements to maintain optimal levels in the body.
It’s about vitamin D. However, excessive consumption of vitamin D is toxic, as was the case with a Briton who arrived at the hospital after practically indulging in such supplements.
The National Center for Health and Medical Research in Australia recommends the level of vitamin D, which can be taken daily, it is between 5 and 15 micrograms (200-600 IU), depending on age, according to ABC Net.
In February 2022, a middle-aged man from the United Kingdom was rushed to hospital with symptoms of vitamin D toxicity – hypervitaminosis D – a rare but very serious disease resulting from taking “overdoses” of vitamin D.
The Briton had taken a cocktail of more than 20 non-prescription supplements a day, which was equivalent to 150,000 international units (IU) of vitamin D, almost 400 times the recommended daily dose.
