New Delhi: Elections will not be held for Congress Working Committee, the highest authority of the Congress. Instead, party president Mallikarjun Kharge will nominate the members. Jairam Ramesh, general secretary in charge of communications, said that the steering committee has unanimously decided to appoint Mallikarjun Kharge to nominate all the members for the working committee.
At the same time, information is also coming out that the decision not to have an election to the working committee and instead to make a nomination is not unanimous. It is reported that Ajay Maken, Abhishek Manu Singhvi, Digvijay Singh and others have put forward the opinion that elections should be held in the steering committee meeting. Singhvi also raised the suggestion that elections could be held even after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Former party president Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and others did not attend the meeting. Senior leaders said that they stayed away from the meeting to create an environment for Mallikarjun Kharge to take decisions independently and not have any influence on the decisions. At the same time, the trio will participate in discussions including formulating strategies related to the 2024 elections. The plenary session of the Congress is being held in Raipur, Chhattisgarh for three days.
