CNV union is one petition started for better working conditions for truck drivers. Company canteens are closed and drivers can only go for take-away food at roadside restaurants. They cannot go to the toilet or shower there. According to the truck drivers, they are in and around their cabs day in, day out.
CNV director Tjitze van Rijssel speaks plain language: “That’s just idiotic and impossible to do”. CNV believes that truck drivers should be able to go to a hotel, so that they can shower and eat normally. The union is angry that the transport companies and the ministry leave these people to their own devices and do not want to arrange anything for them.
Hotel at the expense of the company
“Everyone says that it is important work that truck drivers do, but we see nothing of it,” says Van Rijssel. The truck drivers want to use a hotel at the expense of the company. Van Rijssel: “So that they can take a normal shower and go to the toilet. We also want drivers to be able to go to roadside restaurants. Drivers always have a special pass with them and they can show it, so the catering industry can easily make the difference. ”
There must also be decent facilities, such as indoor toilets, when loading and unloading at customers and distribution centers. And not a few dirty Dixies, says the union official. “We hear and see too many things that are no good.”
Start procedure
If necessary, the CNV driver wants to start a procedure on behalf of the truck drivers: “The first employer who is difficult about this and does not want to pay the bill will have to deal with us.”
