UN: Geopolitical divisions are undermining the work of the UN Security Council and all forms of international cooperation, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said. He also warned that cooperation and discussion would end in “no G” without even collective problem solving.
Guterres spoke on Tuesday at the 77th session of the General Assembly at the United Nations headquarters. Geopolitical divisions undermine the work of the Security Council, undermine international law, undermine trust in democratic institutions and people’s trust, and undermine international cooperation of all kinds.
Guterres told world leaders gathered in person for a public debate at UN headquarters after two years of the Covid pandemic that it can’t continue like this. Various groupings such as the G-20 made up of some members of the international community are also caught in the trap of geopolitical divisions.
No force or coalition can fire alone. No major global challenge can be solved collectively. We need a world coalition. Guterres also said the deal that resumed grain exports across the Black Sea during the Russia-Ukraine war was the result of multilateral diplomacy.
