No measures, no support, but congratulations the prime minister chose to distribute, Kyriakos Mitsotakis to farmers through their regular Sunday message on social media.
The prime minister seemed pleased with the “coordinated and absolutely calm way in which the farmers demonstrated in the heart of Athens”, of course he did not mention anything about their demands and their struggle, while he also congratulated EL.AS., the citizens and to the visitors of the city.
As the Prime Minister wrote:
I start today’s review by congratulating our farmers for the organized and absolutely cool way in which they demonstrated in the heart of Athens, but also the residents and visitors of the city who followed the exhortations of the Traffic Police. I would also like to highlight the exemplary plan of the Greek Police which ensured the fundamental right of citizens to assemble, without, however, unduly disrupting the social and economic life of the city. Managing a complex protest using heavy equipment such as tractors is tangible evidence of another philosophy of crowd management. Smart, efficient and cooperative. It is in practice the implementation of the new law on assemblies that we passed in 2020 and some said that we are doing it to suppress demonstrations. Instead, we facilitated and protected them. Look at what happened in many other countries, including Spain under the socialist government, where peasant protests ended in clashes with the police. I will repeat that the government recognizes that the farmers are right about much, if not everything, and we have satisfied as much as we could by exhausting the fiscal space. But we will not stop discussing with the farmers and very soon I will visit Thessaly again and meet with their representatives. A sustainable agricultural sector is among our highest priorities and this is what the Greek initiative aims to claim, together with the Mediterranean countries, for changes in the Common Agricultural Policy. The competent EU MED-9 ministers (Greece, France, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Spain, Cyprus, Croatia and Slovenia) are meeting on this issue tomorrow.
