No chance for “Star Wars” & Co.: “Avatar 2: The Way Of Water” with a new film record in Germany – Kino News

Pandora’s success story also spans the Christmas holidays. “Avatar 2” took the next record in Germany this weekend: “The Way Of Water” puts “Rogue One”, “Lion King” & Co. in their place.

“Avatar 2: The Way Of Water” has been in German cinemas since December 14, 2022, followed two days later by the start in the USA – and many find it difficult to classify the box office numbers correctly. No wonder: after all, Christmas fell on a weekend this year, so two important cinema days were either missed or much dimmer than in other years. Plus, with Snowstorm Elliott keeping the US in suspense, many Americans have other concerns than removing James Cameron’s cinematic comeback from their watchlist as soon as possible. After all, we also had to wait a good 13 years for the sequel to “Avatar: Departure for Pandora” – a few more days or weeks doesn’t hurt.

In Germany, however, the classification is currently much easier if a few parameters are taken into account: “Avatar 2” is the most successful film on a Christmas weekend in Germany (since recordings started!) if Christmas Eve falls on a Saturday.

Of course, the sci-fi fantasy epic and sequel to the most successful film of all time also jokingly leads the local film charts. “The Way Of Water” attracted 735,000 admissions to German cinemas over the Christmas weekend and, as expected, clearly took the top spot. This was followed by “Puss in Boots 2: The Last Wish” (147,500 tickets sold), “Der Räuber Hotzenplotz” (45,000 tickets sold), “Oscar’s Dress” (40,000 tickets sold) and “Ein Weihnachtsfest für Teddy” ( 24,000 tickets sold). a respectful distance).

The blockbuster is going to “Top Gun: nonconformist“ to replace today/tomorrow as the top-grossing film of 2022 in Germany. But while it remains to be seen whether “Avatar 2” will become a long-running mega-hit like its predecessor, no one can take away its Christmas record. And it’s quite significant:

Christmas record for “Avatar 2” – and how!

Since recordings began, December 24th has fallen six times on a Saturday. And even if universally popular masterpieces or new chapters of mega-popular XXL franchises were shown on those days or weekends, none of them played even remotely in the league of “The Way Of Water” in terms of visitor numbers, as InsideKino it’s wrong Chirping confirmed:

Whether it’s ‘The Chronicles of Narnia’, which as an explosive family fantasy reaches at least a similar level to the ‘Avatar’ films, a star vehicle like ‘Sherlock Holmes 2: Game in the Shadows’ (at least with Robert Downey Jr , which was already Iron Man and thus also a crowd puller) or the “Star Wars” prequel “Rogue One”: No film made the German box office resonate like the return to Pandora on a Christmas weekend. Even Disney’s super classic “The Lion King” has to admit defeat to Jake Sully et al. – by more than 33 percent!

After ‘Avatar 2’: These are the movie dates for ‘Avatar 3’, ‘Avatar 4’ and ‘Avatar 5’ – and the same goes for ‘Avatar 6’ and ‘Avatar 7’!

This record will last for a while

With this, James Cameron gets another record that he probably didn’t even notice, but that will still last for a while. Because the next time Christmas Eve falls on a Saturday it won’t be until 2033.

By then, the next three “Avatar” films will also be finished – provided, of course, that they actually appear according to the current schedule. After all the changes The Way Of Water has gone through, however, one should probably not expect Avatar 3 (December 18, 2024), Avatar 4 (December 16, 2026) and Avatar 5 (December 20, 2028) to really all eventually come to the cinema in time. Since “Avatar 6” and “Avatar 7” are also already under discussion, it is certainly conceivable that there will be some Pandora adventure on the big screen in 2033 – and thus the record of “The Way Of Water” could shake…
