No, AirTags are not designed to track your kids or pets

AirTags, Apple’s new trackers, integrate with the Find My app to allow users to track objects like purses, keys, backpacks or other items from their iPhone . However, Apple insisted in an interview that they weren’t designed to track your kids or pets.

Following the AirTags announcement this week, Apple’s vice president of global marketing for iPhone products, Kaiann Drance, and senior director of detection and connectivity at Apple, Ron Huang, spoke with Fast Company about the tracker, its design and privacy.

While Apple AirTags aren’t necessarily a new concept, they are arguably the most interesting devices presented during Keynote, because they are all new to the Apple ecosystem. Some Internet users already use them to track their children or their animals, a use that Apple does not like very much.

Apple doesn’t want you to stalk

During the interview, Apple executives made it clear that AirTags were designed to track objects, and not people or pets. That doesn’t mean you can’t put one on your kid’s bag, but Apple saysit is better to use an Apple Watch with Family Setup.

Apple introduced a new security feature in its Find My app in the beta of iOS 14.5 that notifies users if the iPhone detects an unknown tracking device, such as an AirTag, used to track them. Therefore, your iPhone will be able to warn you if someone has slipped an AirTag in your bag and is using it to track you down. In fact, you will receive an “AirTag found moving with you” notification, and you will then have the option to deactivate it.

While almost any smartphone can interact with AirTag, AirTag is a “privacy-first” smart tracker. Indeed, if you lose your AirTag, Huang specifies that an individual will not be able to recover it, reset it with his iPhone and continue using it. In addition, it should be noted that AirTags are not intended to be anti-theft devices. AirTags are sold at a price of 35 euros, but Apple also offers sets of 4 AirTags for only 119 euros. For its part, Samsung offers SmartTags for the same price.
