No actresses to be awarded at the first gender-neutral Ensors: “Men just get witty, grave and better roles”

Not a single actress was awarded any prizes at the first gender-neutral edition of the Ensors. “I saw it coming”, says Veerle Baetens (central), seen here with the cast of ‘Dealer’.

The first gender-neutral edition of the Ensors, the most important film and television prizes in Flanders, is a fact. the crime movie Dealer became the big winner on Saturday evening with 10 prizes. What is striking: none of the four acting awards went to a woman.

As of this year, the Ensors will be gender neutral, just like the Berlin Film Festival and the Gouden Kalveren in the Netherlands. Not best actor and best actress, but best leading role and best supporting role. “This year, people will be judged on merit, not on gender and gender,” said presenter Baùl. What is immediately noticeable: not a single actress was awarded, despite nominations for Veerle Baetens (Dealer), Carice van Houten (Red light), Elise Schaap (Ferry) in Viviane De Muynck (Red Sandra).

“I saw it coming”, said Veerle Baetens after the presentation in front of the VRT cameras. Bart Hollanders, with whom she together in Dealer was awarded the Ensor for best supporting role in a film for his portrayal. “And he completely deserved to win”, she wants to be clearly noted.

“But we are apparently not ready for gender-neutral prices. Four guys won because they just have witty, grave and better roles. If we as a society are not yet able to write as many interesting roles for women, then we are shooting ourselves in the foot with this.”
