NLP leaders have asked the Bucharest organization to withdraw its political support for Mayor General Nicușor Dan. What political effects would such a move have?

The leaders of the PNL have asked the head of the Bucharest organization, Ciprian Ciucu, to withdraw his political support from the mayor general, Nicușor Dan, political sources told G4Media. So far, the Bucharest NLP organization has not given any response to the request, according to information from G4Media.

Such a political move would have two effects.

The first – the complete blockade of Nicușor Dan’s projects, which now rests on a majority consisting of PNL and USR in the General Council. We remind you that the general mayor of the capital cannot pass any major project without the vote of the General Council.

The second political effect would be the dramatic decrease in Nicușor Dan’s chances for a second term as mayor general. He won the 2020 administrative elections with the support of PNL and USR, in an alliance forged by Ludovic Orban. In addition, Nicușor Dan remained close to Orban and some of the former PNL leader’s close associates were appointed to executive positions in the mayor’s office by Nicușor Dan.

If he were to lose NLP support, Nicușor Dan would likely be left without the support of the USR, the party he split from in the scandal in 2017.
