NJ Transit Rail Service Suspended Due to Portal Bridge Signal Issue

NEW YORK — NJ Transit rail service in and out of Penn Station New York is suspended due to an issue with the Portal Bridge signal.

PATH is honoring NJ Transit train tickets at Penn Station, Hoboken, and 33rd St-NY stations.

NJ Transit and Amtrak are replacing the two-way Portal Bridge built in 1910 over the Hackensack River with a taller bridge that won’t have to open and close for river traffic, according to the NJ Transit website.

“Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the bridge carried more than 450 Amtrak and NJ TRANSIT trains a day and 200,000 passengers a day over the Hackensack River, a critical link in the congested territory between Newark, New Jersey and Penn Station, New York. “. NJ Transit said.

However, NJ Transit notes that the bridge has, over the years, become a “serious bottleneck and source of delay, particularly when the aging bridge malfunctions during the opening and closing of ship traffic.”
