NEW YORK — This Saturday, November 11, marks Veterans Day, and NJ Transit will honor in a special way all those who have served in the Armed Forces or are currently serving.
The agency announced Wednesday that it invites all active and retired military personnel to ride as complimentary guests on all its public transportation services, train, bus or light rail, during that Saturday.
The idea is that they can ride for free to attend their favorite places or events such as the nation’s largest Veterans Day parade in New York City, ceremonies in New Jersey or simply traveling to work or school.
How can I travel for free?
Veterans and active members (in or out of uniform) may ride any bus, train, and light rail all day Saturday, November 11, simply by showing any of the following valid IDs:
A military identification card (active or retired). A Veterans Administration ID. A membership card from any veterans organization (American Legion, VFW, etc.). Any client wearing a US military uniform.
During the rest of the year, military personnel and their dependents can use the reduced-price one-way ticket with their valid military or military dependent ID. Qualifying military personnel include Active Duty, Reserve and National Guard, and those with official “Retired” status from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps or Coast Guard.
Veterans with service-connected disabilities may present a valid Veterans Affairs (VA) identification card indicating “service connected” to use the reduced one-way ticket option.
