NJ registers 1,283 new cases of COVID-19, its second highest number in 5 months – Telemundo New York (47)

NEW JERSEY – New positive cases of the coronavirus have continued to rise in New Jersey, with state-reported data showing a positivity rate of 10.4 percent over a 7-day moving average per 100,000 people.

The Garden State recorded 1,283 positive cases of COVID-19 on Sunday. It’s the second-highest daily total for the state since May 23, when state health officials reported 1,394 positive tests. The highest daily total since then was reported 10 days ago, the data shows, when 1,301 positive results were reported on October 8.

Recent outbreaks in the state among college students and in parts of Ocean County have increased daily positive tests in New Jersey, but community spread is being seen throughout the state.

Hospitalizations have increased, Governor Murphy said last week. On Thursday, the state reported 733 COVID hospitalizations, the highest total since Aug.5. Its new daily case count has nearly doubled in recent weeks amid increases in Ocean and Monmouth counties.

“We need to lower these numbers,” Murphy said Thursday. “Wear a mask. Social distancing. Wash your hands.”

To date, at least 14,422 people have died of coronavirus-related complications in the state. It is also suspected that there are another 1,800 people whose deaths could have been attributed to COVID-19 but have not been confirmed.

Governor Phil Murphy acknowledged in an interview with CNBC last week that “our numbers have undoubtedly increased in recent weeks” due to some critical points that are beginning to become widespread. He said he did not foresee another total shutdown, but noted, as he did last week, “It is much more likely that we will use a scalpel and go to a particular community.” The problems are specific, as in New York.

Murphy also teamed up with the nation’s leading infectious disease expert, Dr. Anthony Fauci, to urge families to have more reduced Thanksgiving celebrations and the holiday season as the battle to stop the coronavirus from spreading lasts into its eighth month and beyond.

“We urge you not to gather around the dining room table with anyone outside your immediate home,” Murphy said at a news conference Friday. “And if you do, limit that reach to a limited number of close relatives or friends you’ve been with during this pandemic and move your celebration outdoors, if possible.”
