- Linz City Ring and the City of Linz are jointly providing valuable impetus to revitalize Linz’s city center
Shopping, strolling, enjoying culture and gastronomy or simply spending a pleasant time in the city – Linz’s shopping streets, especially Landstrasse, make Linz’s city centre a vibrant centre. It is not for nothing that Landstrasse has been one of the busiest shopping streets in Austria for years.
A stress-free and car-free visit to Landstrasse, Hauptstrasse, Herrenstrasse & Co. is guaranteed until the end of the year – and even free of charge: From September 14th, Linz residents and visitors now have the opportunity to use the Linz AG trams between the Hauptbahnhof and Biegung stops free of charge during business opening hours on Saturdays. The campaign is a cooperation project between the city of Linz and the Linz City Ring (LCR).
“By combining mobility, climate protection and economic revitalization, the city of Linz underlines its claim to be a modern and livable city that relies on innovative and sustainable solutions to improve the quality of life of its citizens on the one hand and to increase the attractiveness of our city center for people from outside on the other. Similar offers from other cities have encouraged us to implement this pilot project,” explains Acting Vice Mayor Karin Hörzing.
“The Linz City Ring is constantly striving to improve shopping and spending time in Linz’s city center in a pleasant way. With free use of the tram, visitors can reach their destinations faster and stress-free. Private transport is reduced, thus protecting the environment, the annoying search for a parking space is eliminated and this time can be used for shopping, and the fact that you can leave your wallet in your pocket when you take the tram makes it unique!” says Matthias Wied-Baumgartner, chairman of the Linz City Ring.
“The ‘Nixi Ticket’ is a great offer for the entire Linz city centre. Shopping, culture, gastronomy or simply chilling – and all without having to spend a long time looking for a parking space. We look forward to many visitors on Saturdays,” says City Manager Mag.a Ursula Fürstberger-Matthey, inviting people to take advantage of the offer.
Mag. Klaus Dietrich, Sales Manager at Linz AG Linien, adds: “Linz AG Linien is looking forward to the pilot project of the Linz City Ring and the City of Linz to revitalize the city center with interest. The project offers not only, but especially, those new to public transport the opportunity to experience the benefits of a stress-free visit to the city. Linz AG Linien offers an attractive public transport service throughout the city all year round, with particularly frequent services in the city center. If the campaign can also promote enthusiasm and support for public transport, we are delighted.”
Mini, midi, maxi, nixi – free ride through the city centre on Saturday
The “Nixi Ticket” – free travel on trams – is valid every Saturday from September 14th: During business hours (9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.), visitors to the city center can use the trams for free between the Hauptbahnhof and Biegung stops until December 28th, 2024. This means that as part of the campaign, everyone can use tram lines 1, 2, 3 and 4 between the Hauptbahnhof and Biegung stops free of charge. The motto is: get on and go!
The offer applies exclusively to trams and any rail replacement services for the lines on this route and does not include other public transport such as buses or the Pöstlingbergbahn. A special ticket is not required.
“The Nixi ticket is an attractive opportunity for locals, tourists and commuters alike to travel free of charge in the city center – specifically from Linz Central Station to the bend. This measure aims to promote local public transport in Linz and at the same time further increase the attractiveness of the city center,” explains Acting Vice Mayor Karin Hörzing.
Valuable synergy effects for the event sector, trade and hospitality
The “Nixi Ticket” campaign is being implemented jointly by the Linz City Ring and the city of Linz. Not only the people of Linz themselves, but also day-trippers and tourists benefit from the opportunity to travel around the city easily and at no additional cost using the Linz AG Linien trams.
During the campaign period from September 14th to December 28th, numerous events will take place in Linz. This measure creates valuable synergy effects for Linz’s economy, tourism and event organizers. The free public transport offer on shopping Saturdays is intended to motivate more people to travel comfortably and in an environmentally friendly way to events such as the Urfahraner Market, the International Bruckner Festival, the Christmas markets and numerous Advent events in the city center. The increased visitor frequency not only supports the event sector, but also stimulates trade and the hospitality industry in Linz.
The Linz pilot project also makes a contribution to climate-friendly mobility: fewer cars in the city center mean fewer emissions, less traffic and an improved quality of life for residents, and private transport in the city center is reduced.
