Nivel: lung covid in at least one in five corona patients

The institute examined more than 10,000 patient records and questioned people who visited their GP because of corona. The so-called post-Covid syndrome (PCS) is a condition about which there is still little clarity.

Big consequences

“There are many reports of people who are still at home for months after a corona infection. The consequences of the corona pandemic therefore seem to have a significant impact on society,” Nivel said. According to a ‘broad definition’, even 37 percent of patients had long-term complaints from a corona infection.

A generally accepted definition of lung covid does not yet exist. Nivel used different definitions for its research, looking at the complaints that patients themselves reported, the patient data after a visit to the GP, the number of consultations and the amount of complaints.

People with lung covid have various complaints such as fatigue, headache, shortness of breath, forgetfulness, loss of smell or depression.

Problems with work

People who suffer from long-term complaints after a corona infection are often unable to work or work less. The cabinet should set aside 150 million euros for people with long covid who work in healthcare and education, say the FNV and the General Education Association (AOb). Because their complaints prevent them from working. It took more than a thousand people so long that they have since been fired.

The unions hold the government partly responsible for the health complaints, because schools initially remained open and because health care workers did not receive the proper protective equipment.
