Niu Tengyu’s mother went to Sihui Prison to meet with Niu Tengyu in person at the end of October. At that time, Niu Tengyu was in good physical and mental condition and emotionally stable. He kept comforting his mother with a smile and vowed never to give up his right to appeal according to law.

Niu Tengyu’s mother said that during previous video meetings, Sihui Prison would usually take the initiative to call the family members to confirm the meeting, but this time she called many times, but the prison authorities did not answer the phone, which felt very wrong. Niu Tengyu’s mother was worried that her son had been poisoned or persecuted, and she suspected that the prison authorities knew about Niu Tengyu’s mental condition.

According to a report by Radio Free Asia, in May 2019, the personal information of Xi Jinping’s daughter Xi Mingze and brother-in-law Deng Jiagui were exposed on social media by overseas keyboard political websites “Red Coast Foundation” and “China Wiki”. Afterwards, the Ministry of Public Security of China set up a task force, and the Maonan Internet Police Brigade of Maoming City, Guangdong Province acted as the case handler. In order to gain credit for the crime, they shifted the blame to the domestic “Vulgar Wiki” website.

Niu Tengyu is a technician and webmaster of the “Evil Wiki” website. On August 22, 2019, 24 members of the website were arrested by the police. Niu Tengyu, who was only 20 years old at the time, was criminally detained by the Maonan Internet Police Brigade on August 24 of that year on suspicion of “helping information network criminal activities”. Niu Tengyu was also accused of spreading false information on the “Vulgar Wiki” website and was vicious. The Maonan Internet Police Brigade once again used torture to extract confessions, and teamed up with local prosecutors and courts to jointly concoct unjust cases. On December 10, 2019, Niu Tengyu was placed under residential surveillance by the Foshan City, Guangdong Province police on suspicion of “subversion of state power.” On February 6, 2021, Niu Tengyu was sentenced to 14 years in prison and fined 130,000 yuan (NT$575,000) for “seeking to cause trouble”, “infringement of personal information” and “illegal business operations”.

“Human Rights Defense Network” pointed out that Niu Tengyu’s heavy sentence was related to his publishing of personal information of high-level members of the Chinese Communist Party and the authorities’ suppression of Hong Kong and Xinjiang. In addition, between December 10, 2019 and January 20, 2020, the authorities used long-term torture to extract confessions from Niu Tengyu.

Niu Tengyu’s mother has always insisted on defending her son, and the case has received widespread attention from the international community.
