According to CEO Chris Deen of cattle feed company ForFarmers, tackling the nitrogen crisis in our country is leading to a polarized social debate and great unrest among livestock farmers.
“We call on politicians to offer space for a conversation, in which everything can be discussed. Collaboration and innovation are more effective and better than remediation alone. Moreover, perspective is a precondition for sustainable business, in whatever sector,” says Deen.
The call comes at a time when emotions are running high. It turns out that billions of companies in the agricultural sector are avoiding a conversation with the cabinet as long as no promises are made to the farmers. So far, only Rabobank and a representative of the supermarkets have joined the conversation.
According to Rabobank CEO Wiebe Draijer, the nitrogen problem in our country can only be solved if everyone starts talking to each other again. He understands the emotions of the farmers, but thinks they risk losing support if they campaign in an aggressive manner.
