Did we regret having to return the Nissan Qashqai E-Power after six months? Yes, because with its space, ease of use and comfort, the semi-electric crossover made our daily lives more pleasant. Yet we still have one question: why that powertrain?
It’s a question Nissan has been trying to answer for over a year now. The Nissan Qashqai E-Power is intended for people who are not yet ready for fully electric driving, but want to enjoy its benefits.
Nissan Qashqai E-Power with seamless acceleration
Think of the low noise level on board, the seamless acceleration and the maximum torque available from a standstill. In a serial hybrid you do not suffer from range anxiety and charging station stress, that is the idea. And that’s right.

Electric powertrain with range extender
What you are hindered by, however, is disappointing fuel consumption. In the Nissan Qashqai E-Power, a 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbocharged engine with variable compression acts as a generator.

It rotates in the background while driving and supplies power to a small 1.97 kWh battery, which in turn powers a 190 hp electric motor on the front axle. It doesn’t need that much petrol for that, you might think, but in reality it’s something else.
Gasoline consumption Nissan Qashqai E-Power
The on-board computer of the Nissan Qashqai E-Power communicates an average consumption of 1 to 15.7 after six months and almost 6700 kilometers. A bit disappointing, but certainly not bad, even if it is well below the official statement of 1 to 18.8.

But we also tracked consumption ourselves, via a mobile app with which we recorded the liters of petrol and the associated mileage, with a result of 1 in 15.2. Again, that’s okay, but our experience is that with a comparable Toyota hybrid scores better.
For the same price you have an electric SUV
And as an alternative to an electric car, the Qashqai doesn’t quite come into its own either. At least not in the Netherlands, where we have the best charging network in Europe and EV driving is already well established.

The choice seems quickly made here, especially since you also have an electric crossover or SUV of the same size for the starting price of an E-Power (45,340 euros).
Everyone’s friend with clear controls Refined E-Power powertrain Lots of comfort and enough space Unrest in the chassis Somewhat disappointing fuel consumption Electric SUVs are about the same price
We wouldn’t mind spending many more months and thousands of miles in the Qashqai. He does what he has to do excellently and leaves few mistakes. Unfortunately, you do not only pay at the dealer for the very pleasant E-Power powertrain, but also at the pump.
Did you see a mistake? Mail us. We are grateful.
