Nissan Leaf Price Reduced: Best-Selling Electric Car Gets Hefty Discount

Until September 30, Nissan is reducing the price of its best-selling Nissan Leaf.

The Leaf 39 kWh Visia model now starts at NOK 199,900, after a hefty price cut of NOK 29,600.

Visia has a 39 kWh battery capacity and the price includes a three-year service agreement. With this battery, the car has a range of 270 km according to the WLTP measurement method.

But it is actually the most affordable model that has received the biggest price cut, both in percentage and in actual kroner. The best-selling equipment model, N-Connecta, has been added with NOK 21,900 to 249,900. It has a larger 59 kWh battery and a range of 385 km.

Note, however, that delivery costs are not included in these prices.

– The promotional price on the simplest versions, with the smallest battery pack, is undoubtedly a signal that Nissan wants its share of the cake in a tough market, says senior advisor and test manager Ståle Frydenlund at the Norwegian Electric Vehicle Association to Nettavisen.

– Tough market

The Nissan Leaf is still Norway’s best-selling electric car model of all time. According to figures from elbilstatistikk.no, there are 77,822 Leafs registered in Norway as of today.

The current model has five and a half behind it on the market. It thus needs an extra push to still be attractive, Frydenlund believes.

This is also confirmed by Stian Thrane, who is head of communications at the Norwegian Nissan importer.

– We are lowering the price of the Nissan Leaf to make it more competitive. It is a tough market we are facing right now, says Thrane.

He adds that interest in the popular electric car model continues to increase, despite the fact that new models have appeared on the market in recent years.

– It is fun to see that it is still so popular, despite the fact that it has been on the market since 2011, concludes Thrane.

Easier to sell petrol and diesel cars

Nettavisen has previously written about people spending less money on cars than before. Although more cars were registered in May this year, compared to last year, cheaper cars are being bought.

– The fact that people feel interest rate increases and price increases on their wallets is clearly seen in new car sales. Far fewer people afford expensive cars than a year or two ago. Now the “people’s cars” dominate the registration figures, i.e. cars with a more affordable price level, said Director Øyvind Solberg Thorsen of the Road Traffic Information Council (OFV) to Nettavisen in June.

Many have become more sober, and would rather choose a more affordable car than gamble with high and expensive loans in an unpredictable financial situation, he believed.

This is also shown in the fact that the price of used electric cars has fallen in recent months, while it takes significantly longer to sell these cars than it did just six months ago.

Terje Dahlgren, business developer at Finn.no, confirms this TV 2 that it now takes four times as long to sell used electric cars – compared to last year.

– The way it looks now, the trend is that it is getting faster and faster to sell fossil-fuel cars, while things are getting slower and slower with hybrids and electric cars, he states.
