Nissan expands into power infrastructure in the UK Realizing a comprehensive V2G energy ecosystem that includes power supply from EVs to homes and the power grid | Autoprobe

On October 10, 2024, Nissan announced that it will introduce more affordable Vehicle to Grid (V2G) technology to some EVs sold in the UK in 2026.

V2G is a technology that can supply electricity stored in an EV’s battery to the power grid or home.

This allows EVs to store electricity generated by wind, solar, etc., and send that electricity to the power grid when needed, suppressing fluctuations in the power supplied by the grid, and further increasing the proportion of renewable energy. We can reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

Following the success of a one-year demonstration project conducted at the University of Nottingham in the UK to introduce this technology, Nissan became the first automobile company to obtain grid certification code “G99” for an alternating current (AC) system. This made it possible to supply power to the power source.

Nissan has a track record of approximately 40 V2G demonstration experiments conducted around the world over the past 10 years, and leveraging that knowledge, under the umbrella of “Nissan Energy”, Nissan will first conduct trials in the UK, then other European countries. The plan is to deploy V2G in the market. Determining whether AC or DC is appropriate for deployment will depend on local infrastructure and regulatory requirements.

The introduction of V2G is part of Nissan’s vision to promote the use of renewable energy in zero-emission EVs, while also creating a comprehensive energy ecosystem that includes EVs powering homes and the power grid. It has become an essential technology in a society where EVs are widespread.

The two-way V2G that Nissan is certified and introducing in the UK is an AC system that uses an on-board charger to lower installation costs and make V2G available to more people.

The company aims to offer this AC bidirectional charger at the same price as currently available unidirectional chargers. Furthermore, by using a dedicated application, users of the service will be able to flexibly control the electricity stored in their EVs.

Hugues Demarcilier, director of Nissan’s global energy ecosystem and EV program, said: “The technology we are now offering to our customers has the potential to be a game changer that will significantly change the role of cars.EVs. “Not only is it a means of transportation, but as a running storage battery, it can also help reduce daily costs, break away from dependence on fossil fuels, and create a carbon-free society.”
