Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. and Honda Motor Co., Ltd. announced on March 15 that they have signed a memorandum of understanding to begin considering a strategic partnership toward the electrification and intelligence of automobiles.

Discussions on forming this partnership began around mid-January, and while he said that different companies have different cultures, he said, “Once we overcome that barrier, we will be able to maximize synergies, which is highly efficient.” The company believes that it is possible to do so, leading to the conclusion of this memorandum of understanding.

In the future, rather than sharing products, the two companies will consider collaborating within the car, such as mutually complementing core component products related to in-vehicle software platforms and battery electric vehicles (EVs).

At the press conference held on the same day, Makoto Uchida, President and CEO of Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., and Toshihiro Mibe, Director, President and Representative Executive Officer of Honda Motor Co., Ltd., took the stage.

Mr. Mibe said, “We are considering the possibility of a partnership between the two companies from the perspective of whether the synergistic effects of the technology and knowledge that both companies have cultivated over the years will enable us to become a leader in the creation of new value for automobiles as a top runner in the industry. We will be considering the details of EV-related initiatives from now on, and we will discuss in detail how we will do this, whether we will form a joint research company, etc. “Currently, we are still at the stage of considering collaboration.”

Mr. Uchida said, “Emerging manufacturers are entering the market with innovative products and business models, and are trying to dominate the market with overwhelming price competitiveness and speed. In order to survive this competition, we must rely on conventional industry common sense and methods. We will never be able to compete if we are limited by the current market conditions.I believe we need to take advantage of our existing strengths, develop what needs to be improved, and fundamentally review what needs to be changed. As the market becomes more complex, In a situation where it is extremely difficult to carry out all the technological development necessary for automation and intelligence in-house, we believe that we will be able to create new value by combining the knowledge that both companies have, so we have decided to strategically We have agreed to start considering a partnership. We will explore the possibility of collaboration in a wide range of fields, what we can do and what we should do, and we will quickly decide what we can do and put it into action. “I think so,” he said, explaining how they came to consider collaboration.
