Nipah Outbreak in Kozhikode: Two Deaths Confirmed and Central Team to Investigate

Kozhikode ∙ Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandavya has informed that Nipah has been confirmed in two persons who have died in the district. The disease was confirmed at the Pune Institute of Virology. The central team will reach the state soon. The Union Health Minister also informed that the results of the four suspected samples are awaited. Both deaths were in a private hospital in Kozhikode city.

The two deceased persons were examined after developing Nipah symptoms. Three relatives of one of them are undergoing treatment in the hospital. The relatives of the deceased and the treated health workers are under observation. In the event that Nipah symptoms were observed, the private hospital officials informed the government. Then a high-level meeting was held in Thiruvananthapuram under the leadership of Minister Veena George.

Since Nipah has been reported twice in Kerala earlier, the health department is taking measures accordingly. The first death occurred on August 30. The deceased was a native of Maruthonkara. His two children aged four and nine and a relative are under treatment. In this, the health condition of the children continues to be serious.

The nine-year-old survives with the help of a ventilator. It is reported that the condition of the 25-year-old relative is satisfactory. The next person died on Monday. The sample had not been sent for testing when the first patient died. Both the deceased had Nipah symptoms and the samples were sent for testing.
